Governing network evolution in the quest for identity

    Get PDF
This paper provides a managerial account of network governance by exploring how initially non-powerful agents, driven by the quest for distinctive identity, shape the governance of their networks over time. The research design is that of a longitudinal comparative case study of the trajectories of three renowned, Oscar-winning Spanish filmmakers. It scrutinizes data coming from original interviews, as well as from multiple secondary data sources, in order to illustrate the propositions advanced. The paper's contribution is sought: 1) in proposing a micro-level framework for systematic thinking about network governance evolution, distinguishing four dimensions (co-governance, structure, strategy, and pace) and their respective sub-categories; 2) in advancing three peculiar identity profiles with different implications for the evolution of network governance (i.e., a maverick, an integrated professional, and a broker); 3) in bringing together two bodies of literature that have not conversed frequently (i.e., network governance and identity) in a largely overlooked cultural and historical context, that of Spain after the transition to democracy in 1975.Network governance; Management

The Complexity of Corruption: Nature and Ethical Suggestions

    Get PDF
Corruption is a well-established research topic which increasingly attracts interest, as attested by a growing body of literature. Nevertheless, disagreements persist not only about how to curve it, but even about its definition, causes and consequences. Such a lack of consensus reflects the complexity of the problem, a feature which is often cited but rarely analyzed. This paper aims to fill that gap. In particular, we first address the nature of corruption’s complexity by offering and analyzing an inventory of “generators of complexity” compiled from the available literature. Secondly, our paper draws from the key conclusions of that analysis to shed some light on the complex role played by corporations on corruption. Finally, we suggest that ethical aspects have to be considered in order to clarify many complex dilemmas around corruption and illuminate the corporate role in both domestic and foreign business activity.

Benchmarking Particle Filter Algorithms for Efficient Velodyne-Based Vehicle Localization

Keeping a vehicle well-localized within a prebuilt-map is at the core of any autonomous vehicle navigation system. In this work, we show that both standard SIR sampling and rejection-based optimal sampling are suitable for efficient (10 to 20 ms) real-time pose tracking without feature detection that is using raw point clouds from a 3D LiDAR. Motivated by the large amount of information captured by these sensors, we perform a systematic statistical analysis of how many points are actually required to reach an optimal ratio between efficiency and positioning accuracy. Furthermore, initialization from adverse conditions, e.g., poor GPS signal in urban canyons, we also identify the optimal particle filter settings required to ensure convergence. Our findings include that a decimation factor between 100 and 200 on incoming point clouds provides a large savings in computational cost with a negligible loss in localization accuracy for a VLP-16 scanner. Furthermore, an initial density of ∼2 particles/m 2 is required to achieve 100% convergence success for large-scale (∼100,000 m 2 ), outdoor global localization without any additional hint from GPS or magnetic field sensors.

OBLIC: Classification System Using Evolutionary Algorithm

    Get PDF
We present a new classification system based on Evolutionary Algorithm (EA), OBLIC. This tool is an OBLIque Classification system whose function is to induce a set of classification rules no hierarchical from a database or training set. The core of the algorithm is a EA with real-coded and Pittsburgh approach. Each individual is composed by a no fixed classification rules set what split in regions the search space. The fitness of each classification is obtained by means of the exploration of these regions. The result of the tool is the best classification obtained in the evolutionary process

Mining interesting regions using an evolutionary algorithm

    Get PDF
In this paper, we offer a new method to induce interesting knowledge from the relevant sets of data in databases for supervised learning. Thus, in this work, ELLIPSES is presented as a new method oriented to discover knowledge according to the expert's needs, by the detection of the most significant regions. The method essence is found in an evolutionary algorithm that finds these regions one after another. The expert decides which regions are significant and determines the stop criterion. The extracted knowledge is offered through two types of rules: Quantitative and Qualitative. The tool also offers a visualization of each rule by parallel coordinate systems. The ELLIPSES results are compared with C4.5 on UCI Repository datasets

The same pathway to the Weddell Sea birdlife, after 65 years: similarities in the species composition, richness and abundances

As part of a multi-year study of top predators in Antarctica, we conducted a seabird shipbased survey on board Almirante Irizar icebreaker in the Weddell Sea to the Filchner Ice Shelf in the austral summer 2020. We carried out 10-minute counts along 1843 km during 125 hours of observation. We analyzed the species distributions and the relationships with the ice cover. We registered 15 species of which four represented more than 85% of the total abundance: Antarctic petrel Thalassoica antarctica (43.9%), snow petrel Pagodroma nivea (16.3%), Arctic tern Sterna paradisaea (15.2%) and emperor penguin Aptenodytes forsteri (10.1%). Species distribution and its relationship with ice cover were analyzed statistically. The ice cover concentration was estimated by using satellite images. We compared our results with the first ship-based bird survey conducted up to the Filchner Ice Shelf in the austral summer 1955/56 to analyze possible changes in the bird community over time. Out of 13 recorded species in the 1955/56 cruise, 11 were present in this study with similar abundance proportions. In both cruises, the bird community consisted of a group of non-numerous species associated with icefree waters and another group of very numerous species associated with high concentrations on ice cover. The similarities between the two cruises, spaced 65 years apart, suggest a temporal persistence of the bird community of the central and the southern Weddell Sea that could be explained by the dynamics of the ice cover and the presence of reproductive colonies within the study site. The current environmental warming is alarming in this bird community because more than 85% of all its individuals belong to four species strongly dependent on ice cover
